Teen Patti Rules: Everything You Need to Know
Also known as Flush or Flash, Teen Patti is an online casino card game that is incredibly popular in India. Played with a deck of 52 cards, the game of Teen Patti features simple rules and can easily be mastered after playing a few rounds.
In this article, we provide an insight into everything you need to know about Teen Patti rules, from the ranking of hands to the complete betting process in Teen Patti.
The objective of Teen Patti
The Teen Patti game is played with a deck of 52 cards (excluding jokers) and the cards are shuffled after each round. As a player, your objective is to have a hand of cards stronger than the dealer. You and the dealer both are dealt with three cards each. If you manage to get a card combination higher than the dealer, you win.
The betting process in Teen Patti
Teen Patti betting rules are quite simple and straightforward. The betting process starts with the player to the left of the dealer and then continues in clockwise order around the table. Each player, in turn, can either put an additional bet into the pot to stay in the game or pay nothing and fold. If you choose to fold, you permanently drop out of the game and lose the money you have already put into the pot during the deal.
The amount that you have to wager at your turn in order to stay in the game depends on the “current stake”, and whether you’re playing blind or seen. The players who have seen their cards must bet twice as much as the blind player in order to stay in the game. At the start of the betting round, the current stake is the boot amount – the minimum amount that each player needs to put into the pot.
- If you’re a blind player (have not seen your cards), you must bet at least the current stake and not more than twice the current stake. The current stake for the next player is the amount that you wager.
- If you’re a seen player, you must bet at least twice the current stake and not more than four times the current stake. The current stake for the next players becomes half the amount you put in.
If you’re playing blind, you have the option to look at your cards at any point in the game. You then become a seen player and from that turn onwards, you must bet at least twice the current stake (or fold).
The betting process continues in this manner until one of the following things happens:
- All except one player at the table have folded. Here, the last remaining money wins all the money in the pot, irrespective of the cards held.
- All except two players at the table have folded and one of these at their turn pays for a show. Here, the cards of both the players are compared and the hand with the highest value is the winner.
Rules for a show in Teen Patti
In Teen Patti, the rules for a show are as follows:
- A show cannot occur until all but two players have folded.
- If you’re playing blind, you’ll need to wager you’re your current stake for a show. You do not look at your own Teen Patti sequence until you’ve paid for the show.
- If you’re a seen player and the other player is playing blind, you cannot demand a show. Here, you only have the option to continue betting or fold.
- If both players have seen their cards, either player, in turn, may pay the current stake for a show.
- In a show, players’ cards are exposed and compared, and the player with the best Teen Patti sequence wins the pot. If it happens that the two hands are equal, then the player who did not pay for the show wins the pot.
Rules for sideshow in Teen Patti
In Teen Patti, sideshow means that you want to compare your cards with the cards of the previous player. You can only ask for a sideshow if you’ve seen your cards and the player who wagers immediately before you has also seen the cards. The player can accept or decline your sideshow request.
- If the sideshow request is accepted, the two players privately compare their cards, and the player with the lower hand ranking is forced to fold. If both the hands are equal, then the player who asked for the sideshow must fold.
- If the sideshow request is declined, the betting round continues as usual with the player who requested for a sideshow. A player can decline the sideshow request only a maximum of three times after which he will be forced to accept it.
- Note that different levels in Teen Patti have different limits on the number of times you can decline a sideshow request. In some Teen Patti variations, you’re allowed to reject a sideshow request once in level 1, and you can reject the request three times in other levels.
The ranking of hands in Teen Patti
The ranking of hands in Teen Patti, from high to low, is as follows:
Trail/Trio/Set/Three of a Kind
The best three-card hand or the highest hand in Teen Patti is a trail. As the name suggests, this hand refers to the occurrence of three sequences of the same rank. Three aces are the highest trio and three two are the lowest.
Straight Flush/Run/Straight/Pure Sequence
A straight flush or pure sequence consists of three cards of the same suit in a sequence. The highest straight run is A-K-Q, followed by A-2-3, K-Q-J, and so on till 4-3-2.
A normal run or sequence consists of three consecutive cards, not all of the same suit. Once again, A-K-Q is the best normal run in Teen Patti. Next comes A-2-3, K-Q-J, and so on till 4-3-2.
This hand contains any three cards of the same suit. If two players in the game have flush, then the player with the highest card in combination wins. The highest color is A-K-J and the lowest is 5-3-2.
This hand comprises of three cards where two cards are of the same rank. If two players have identical pairs, then the one with the highest third card wins.
The weakest hand that one can get in Teen Patti is the high card. A high card is a combination of cards that don’t belong to any of the above types. The best high card hand in Teen Patti is A-K-J of the same suits and the worst is 5-3-2.
What are Teen Patti variations?
When playing Teen Patti online, players have the options to choose from a variety of Teen Patti variations. Here are some of the most popular ones:
Lowest Card Joker
One of the most famous variations of Teen Patti found online is the Lowest Card Joker. What’s unique about this variation is the fact that the joker is the lowest valued card in your hand. In the case of multiple lowest cards, all of them are considered jokers. The inclusion of jokers makes Lowest Card Joker easier than regular Teen Patti.
Highest Card Joker
As the name suggests, the highest card from your hand is considered as a joker in this variation. In the case of multiple highest cards, all these cards are considered Jokers. The ranking of hands is as per the standard Teen Patti game where the joker is replaced with a better card.
Muflis is a fun Teen Patti variation where the rules are opposite to a normal Teen Patti game. In a game of Muflis, the weakest Teen Patti sequence is considered as the highest valued set. And the highest is considered as lowest. So, the player with the worst hand according to the normal Teen Patti game beats the player with the best hand.
AK47 is another unique and highly played variation of Teen Patti. Here, the ace (A), king (K), 4, and 7 cards of all suits are considered jokers. Players can have multiple jokers provided multiple A or K or 4 or 7 cards. The ranking of hands is as per normal Teen Patti rules where the joker is replaced with a better card.
999 is an exciting variation of Teen Patti where your aim is to get as closest as possible to 999. In this game, the 9 card of any suit has the most value. Here, the face cards (K, Q, J, 10) have a value of zero. All the other cards have the same value as their number and an ace is considered 1.
10xboot is a Teen Patti variation that is almost entirely similar to the normal Teen Patti game. The only difference is when you’re playing 10xboot, the boot amount will be 10 times more than the usual boot value.
In Hukum, players are dealt with two normal cards and one joker. Everyone at the table gets one compulsory joker. The ranking of hands is as per the normal Teen Patti rules where jokers are replaced with a better card.

Tips to improve your chance of winning at Teen Patti
Although Teen Patti is a game of chance, good players will ultimately have more chances of winning than novice players. Here are some tips that can help you in improving your chances of winning at the game:
Know the rules and ranks of hands
This goes without saying: it’s important for you to know the rules of the Teen Patti variant you want to play. While the rules of Teen Patti are pretty simple and straightforward, playing in front of a live dealer can be a completely different experience for some players. As such, make sure that you’ve played the online version beforehand so you don’t get overwhelmed in front of the real dealer in live Teen Patti.
Know the side bets
Many experienced tend to make side bets in Teen Patti. So, you’ll require the knowledge of all the bets you can make in the game.
Use the sideshow option
If you’re not sure about your cards, request for a sideshow option from the preceding player. Out of you two, whosoever has better, will stay in the game. This feature helps you in deciding whether your hand is worth continuing the game or not.
Know when to quit
One of the major keys to success in Teen Patti is knowing when to quit. As the game of Teen Patti largely relies on luck, your hand will not have good cards all the time. If you feel that your cards are not good enough, it makes sense to fold and wait for a better hand in the next round.
